Silhouette Soliloquy

My Pandemic Project

Project Statement:

This is my Pandemic Project. I was inspired by small, Morandi-esque, still life objects I had in the studio from teaching virtually. I drew along with the students during class. The rendered objects morphed into flat shapes because, well, I am all about shapes. The arrangement of the objects is a metaphor for the isolating experience of quarantine – alone together, distanced from family and friends, and being grouped by household. The silhouettes function as shapes on the surface and as windows onto infinite space. The abstract grounds reflect the daily uncertainty of the pandemic. In the series, there are twenty-four drawings for hours of the day, and the square is seven inches to symbolize the days of the week. I wanted to document time and the repetition of living in a monotony of days.
